Programs

Advocacy

Our mission begins with the programs we provide. Independence, choice, self-determination, goals, and achievement come together to help make dreams a reality.

In 1973, the civil rights movement for people with disabilities culminated in an historic piece of legislation called the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It provided the framework for centers for independent living.

Skills Training

Centers for independent living traditionally provide four core services. These include:

  1. Advocacy (supporting consumers when they encounter attitudinal, physical or communication barriers)
  2. Information and Referral (refer consumers to other community resources that can be of benefit to them)
  3. Peer Support (one person with a disability mentoring another)
  4. Skills Training (teaching consumers skills needed to live independently).
Information and Referral

At the Center for Independent Living in Central Florida, Inc., we offer other program services as well. These include employment training and placement, distribution of telecommunications equipment for the deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired, and home and vehicle modifications and equipment.
